Position Sizing & Prop Risk Questions
How is the lot size worked out?
Lot size = money you risk ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value of one lot). The money you risk is your account size × your risk percentage per trade. The calculated result is rounded down to 0.01 lots, so you never accidentally risk more capital than planned.
What is the pip value of one lot?
One standard Forex lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency, meaning a pip is worth 10 units of the quote currency. For pairs ending in USD (such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD), one pip per standard lot is exactly $10.00. For cross pairs, it is converted at prevailing exchange rates. For Gold (XAU/USD), 1 standard lot is 100 troy ounces, so a 1 pip ($0.10) move is $10.00 ($1.00 price move = $100.00 per lot).
How many futures contracts can I trade?
Futures contracts = money you risk ÷ (stop in points × value per point). One point is worth $50 on ES, $5 on MES, $20 on NQ, $2 on MNQ, $100 on Gold GC, and $1,000 on Crude Oil CL. The result is rounded down to whole contracts. Note that futures prop firms also impose maximum contract tier ladders (e.g. max 5 NQ or 50 MNQ on a $50K account), so ensure you do not exceed your firm’s ceiling.
How do I size a crypto position?
Position value ($) = money you risk ÷ stop loss distance percentage. For example, with $500 at risk and a 2.0% stop loss distance, your position value is $25,000. Dividing $25,000 by Bitcoin’s price ($95,000) gives 0.263 BTC. Leverage determines required margin collateral, but your position size dictates the actual dollar risk.
What lot size should I use on a $100K prop firm account?
At conservative 0.5% risk ($500) with a 20 pip stop loss on EUR/USD ($10 per pip per lot), the safe position size is 2.50 standard lots. At 1.0% risk ($1,000), it is 5.00 lots. On volatile instruments like Gold (XAU/USD), a 30-pip ($3.00 move) stop at 0.5% risk permits 1.66 lots.
How many MNQ or NQ contracts can I trade on a $50K account?
At 1.0% risk ($500) with a 20-point stop loss: MNQ is $2.00 per point ($40 risk per contract), allowing you to safely trade 12 contracts. NQ is $20.00 per point ($400 risk per contract), meaning you can only trade 1 contract. Using Micros (MNQ) enables far finer position scaling.
Why does it show losses in a row?
Prop firm evaluations fail when a cumulative drawdown threshold is breached, rarely on a single trade. Seeing how many consecutive losses your daily limit (e.g. 5%) and maximum limit (e.g. 10%) allow at your chosen size tells you whether your risk parameters will withstand standard market drawdowns.
Is any data I enter saved or sent to servers?
No. The Prop Firm Lenz position size calculator runs 100% locally in your client browser. No account balance, risk metrics, or trade parameters are transmitted, logged, or stored on any server.
